The rest of Guatemala is peppered with historical, cultural and
natural attractions. Below are some which are reachable on a day
trip or as a weekend getaway from Quetzaltenango:
Abaj
Takalik
The Mayan ruins of Abaj Takalik are situated about 3 hours
by bus from Quetzaltenango.
These fascinating ruins show strong influence from the Olmec
civilization of Mexico.
El Quetzal school visits Abaj Takalik regualrly as an extra
curricular activity.
Moreover, a small-scale zoo is also located on the grounds,
housing many animals you may never have seen before.

La
Muela
Beginning from Xela's central park, the summit of this mountain
can be reached in in about 2 hours. It's an easy climb.On
the way, there is a natural steam bath and popular picnic
locations.
The rock is shaped like teeth and La Muela (molar) is the
name given to this strange spectacle.
This mountain can be seen also from the veranda of El Quetzal.
After climbing the mountain, students often catch a bus
to a nearby hot springs where they can relax and work up
anoither sweat.

Lago
de Atitlan
The Atitlan lake is often called the most beautiful lake
in the world.
Since it is a 3 hour bus ride from Quetzaltenango, a day
trip to the lake is fully possible. But be warned - many
people stay for much longer.
The most famous town on the lake is Panajachel, but the
other villages the lake each have their unique charms.

Volcan
Santa Maria
The Santa Maria volcano is 3770m in altitude, and is the
highest point in the department of Quetzaltenango.
The ridgeline of the beautiful triangle can be seen from
the city of Quetzaltenango.
You can reach the summit after a rigorous
climb, startying in the morning. Another popular option
is to climb the volocano on the night oif the full moon.
The view of surrounding mountains from the summit of the
volcano is spectacular.
Moreover, on Sunday, local men are also climbing a mountain,
and the communication with local men is also one of charms.
