Here's what some of our ex-students say about us...

My experience studying at El Quetzal Spanish School was exceptional. Whereas some of the local Spanish schools are large, impersonal and overcrowded, El Quetzal has retained a small and inviting environment. The teachers are well trained and competent, and I was able to improve my conversational and writing skills within a couple of weeks.
I had a great experience getting to know the owner, Glenda, and spending time with her family. She is a very accommodating and intelligent woman, and was very flexible in terms of balancing my work and study schedules. I have recommended El Quetzal to several friends and co-workers, and have yet to meet someone not satisfied with their learning experience.

I have ended up at what I consider the best unknown Spanish school in Xela. It´s El Quetzal School. First the director has about 15 years of experience (in fact she trained the owner of one of the newest schools- San Miguel). Second the director trained all of her teachers to be just as incredible as her. She has activities no other schools use.
For example, she teaches vocabulary only by using Antonyms and Synonyms- and yes, I am learning twice the vocabulary with half the effort. Brilliant. I would fully recommend this school and after living in Xela for about 4 months, researching loads of schools it is by far one of the best (right up there with PLQ).

I had already had a couple of weeks of intensive Spanish lessons before I started classes with Glenda from El Quetzal. I left the other school because I was looking for something more flexible, I was working in a volunteer job almost fulltime at this time. In total, Glenda has been my teacher for about six months, on and off, usually one or two hours a week. Glenda has years of experience in teaching Spanish, which is noticeable during the classes.
Just speaking Spanish is not enough to be a Spanish teacher - you have to have good knowledge of the grammar and teaching skills. Glenda has both of these things. The atmosphere during the classes was always very open, which made me feel comfortable. The contents of the classes varied; we studied grammar and did exercises, or read a newspaper article, we looked at my homework (if I had done it…), and there were also classes in which we just talked, about subjects varying from Guatemalan politics or my volunteer work (she was always interested in that,) to more personal issues. Lessons were open for your own input as well. Once, Glenda invited me and her other students to the baptism of her daughter and a dinner with her family afterwards. It was a very nice experience and I felt honoured to be there. Glenda, thank you for all of this!!

After studying with 4 different language schools over a period of 3 months, I really appreciated the caliber of teaching Glenda was able to offer. Her attention to detail, flexibility in using resources, and knowledge of learning styles really showed up all the other teachers I have had. She seemed to know exactly when and how to really push me into integrating the grammatical concepts I learned into my daily speaking. It was evident that she was not there just to pass the time, but really to help me learn the language. Glenda is honest and hardworking. She is a teacher who loves teaching. Most importantly this language school is the most trustworthy school I have found. I highly recommend studying here.

Greetings! Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. All and all I had a fantastic experience. El Quetzal is a fabulous school and I felt like another member of the family. My host family was amazing. Everything was great. Now I just need to study my Spanish! :) Thank you SO much for setting me up with these opportunities.

El Quetzal Spanish School is a phenomenal place to further your language abilities, regardless of your starting point. Glenda, who runs the school and is a phenomenal language teacher, works to recruit excellent teachers from around Xela, some of whom have worked for her for 8+ years. The small, intimate school environment makes the afternoon activities/outings great opportunities to practice more Spanish with a trained teacher and with the other students.
With such a small group, you'll always have a teacher around to correct your mistakes and answer questions when you have them. I highly recommend El Quetzal for your language study -- they do an excellent job of feeling out your strengths and weaknesses as a Spanish speaker and zeroing in on the areas you can improve upon.
