Around Quetzaltenango...

There are many fascinating villages surrounding Quetzaltenango. See the map below for their location, and further below for descriptions of their unique charms.

Almolonga
From Quetzaltenango, by bus, a city that lives on water. On Saturday it is very crowded.

As for the feature, there are many men who still use traditional dress.

For souvenir shoppers, a beautiful skirt is a must. The Cathedral (church) also has a fascinating history.

Momostenango
This city is famous for its blankets, called "Chamarras". The city comes alive on Sundays.
There is a rocky mountain which made the strange form others as promise.

San Francisco El Alto
The market in the town of San Francisco El Alto is held on Fridays. It is one of the highest makrets in the country, at an altitude of 2640m.

It is not so much a tourist market, but you should look out for the huipil of rich individuality which the indigenous women wear when they come to the market from surrounding Villages.
Zunil
This town is located about 9km from Quetzaltenango. There is a public bathhouse and the students of El Quetzal often go out to enjoy the hot waters.

About 30 minutes from the town of Zunil by pickup truck, there is also a natural hot spring.

Nahuala
It is a town famous for the textiles made by people who use traditional dress.
Salcaja
Most men are engaged in the manufacture of textiles and are earnjing a living by dyeing of thread, a twist, textile, etc.
Moreover, this town is also famous for its peculiar fruit wine.
San Juan Ostuncalco
This town is famous for its furniture, made from knitted willow branches, handicrafts and musical instrument manufacture.
Totonicapan
This small town located between the mountains and surrounded by pine trees is famous for elaborate textiles and simple earthenware.
